Our Lewis and Clark unit began
with a Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS) exercise using a map showing the
Louisiana Purchase. Then we discussed President Thomas Jefferson’s instructions
to Lewis & Clark before they set off on their mission. Students had to take
on the role of Meriwether Lewis or William Clark and write a letter to Congress
justifying their need for $2,500 for the expedition. While reading How we crossed the West : the adventures of Lewis &
Clark by Rosalyn Schanzer, each
child traced the journey on their own maps, learning about the many discoveries
and hazards they experienced along the way. Many discussions followed including
ones about the relationships Lewis and Clark
established with the many native tribes they encountered on their journey.
Finally the unit will culminate in a JigSaw, where children each take on the
role of being an expert of one perspective, sharing and explaining this with
small groups of individuals who share a different perspective.
